SCIENCE OF BEING SEEN (SOBS)  SOBS - WHAT IS IT? A magician knows that the 'world' we see has been built entirely inside our brains and that it can be used to fool the audience. And the audience knows that they are about to be fooled, yet still can't spot the tricks. Riding a motorcycle or a scooter, we're the magician and the road users around us are our audience. Our magic power is invisibility, but there are a couple of extra deceptions involved. All too often the motorcyclist doesn't realise he / she is about to fool the audience. And the motorcyclist's audience of drivers doesn't know the biker is a magician either. Based on decades of scientific research into these crashes and originally created for the fire services BIKER DOWN courses, this webcast of the FULL SOBS PRESENTATION reveals the secrets of our very own motorcycling invisibility show. This is YOUR CHANCE to see the ORIGINAL TALK updated with the most recent research. We'll investigate why drivers continue to fail to spot motorcycles, and why conspicuity aids have proven largely ineffective. We'll see how to use hi-vis clothing and day-riding lights more effectively, how to improve our night time conspicuity, and conclude by looking at pro-active riding strategies that reduce the risks of being caught out by someone else's error. CAN'T MAKE IT LIVE? The stream will be available for 72 hours after the presentation for you to catch up in your own time. HELP FUND SOBS. SOBS receives no funding and remains entirely self-funded. All income from sales is ploughed back into website hosting, further research and writing.  TICKETS ARE JUST £5. Attendance is limited to 30 people per event. Schedule Time Item 7:50 pm Virtual doors open 8:00 pm Presentation starts 8:45 pm Question time (approximately) 9:00 pm Presentation ends (approximately) SOBS HISTORY - the 'Science Of Being Seen' (SOBS) presentation was originally  written over the winter of 2011/12 as a proactive accident prevention module for the pilot 'Biker Down' courses developed by Kent Fire and Rescue Service. 'Biker Down' has since been picked up by most fire services in the UK as well as the UK military, and a version of SOBS was used by many Biker Down teams until 2020 - I personally delivered SOBS for KFRS at Rochester until the COVID crisis in March 2020. SOBS featured on the Devitt's webpages in 2021: The science of being seen on a motorbike | Devitt (devittinsurance.com) ...Bruce E - All good thanks Kevin, read twice, seen twice, always learn each time! AWARD WINNING - our 'Biker Down' team in Kent was awarded a Prince Michael of Kent International Road Safety Award at the end of 2012 and a insurance industry award in 2013.   ...Paul C - Thank you Kevin. The books support the explanations you've given. Very enjoyable. GOING INTERNATIONAL - in 2018 and 2019 I took SOBS to New Zealand, as one of a team of international speakers on the nationwide Shiny Side Up rider safety initiative. We travelled around the country to visit over a dozen venues on each occasion. I reprised the role as a virtual speaker in 2021.  In 2020, SOBS was broadcast to viewers worldwide as one of the presentations featured on the US-based REVVtalks series of better biking webinars from riding experts around the world. SOBS was also a featured presentation in the spring 2021 RoadSafetyGB 'Powered Two Wheeler' safety week.  And of course, since 2012 I have been delivering SOBS to clubs and rider groups around the UK, both in person and most recently via Zoom. ...Paul In Shanghai - Excellent Kevin. As is often said, one never stops learning! SCIENCE-BASED - SOBS was created to solve a practical riding problem - the SMIDSY collision - but is based firmly on scientific research. SOBS is regularly updated as new studies emerge - the talk has been only recently been updated to reflect new studies on lighting arrangements and the 'looked, saw but forgot' theory that appeared in the literature as recently as 2018. Find all the latest news at the free-to-access website at www.scienceofbeingseen.org - each topic is supported by references to available research, a body of data extending back to the 1970s.  ...Clive - That was useful. POSTPONED - APRIL LIVE ONLINE - Using Sports Psychology in riding
20:00 – 21:00
POSTPONED I've been feeling increasingly unwell this afternoon so have decided to put the live talk on hold - what I'll probably do is pre-record it when I feel rather better, and make it available as a recording. Many apologies for all the inconvenience. I think this talk is fated!  APRIL LIVE ONLINE - Using Sports Psychology in riding All about Pre-Performance Preparation & getting ready to ride WHY DO WE NEED SPORTS PSYCHOLOGY? Sports psychology is an interdisciplinary science that draws on knowledge from many related fields and The answer is quite simple - though you might be forgiven that riding a bike depends heavily  on technical ability because we spend so much time focused on riding 'skill', the fact is that it's actually our MENTAL abilities that allow us to use those PRACTICAL practical riding skills to the best advantage.  And that's where understanding some basic Sports Psychology can give us a real heads-up.  Here are some common issues for riders. Struggling to focus on your riding? Bored with your standard commuting ride? Still thinking about work on the ride home? I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve ridden round the M25 and to avoid the trap of riding on autopilot we all need a reliable Pre-Performance routine. This is a straightforward mental warm-up that helps us switch our focus to the task of riding the bike.  If you’re in a rush to get on the road, drinking your tea and chewing a piece of toast as you cram your helmet on and try to remember where you left the key, you’re definitely NOT using a pre-performance routine, and you're more likely to be caught out by the random hazards you encounter on your next ride! During the talk, I'll offer up some simple and easy-to-use routines to help you get your head in the right place and get your 'race face' on.  This is YOUR CHANCE to see a LIVE WEBCAST from the author of the 'Science Of Being Seen' presentation. CAN'T MAKE IT LIVE? The stream will be available for 72 hours after the presentation for you to catch up in your own time. TICKETS ARE JUST £5. Attendance is limited to 30 people per event. PLEASE ENSURE YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS IS CORRECT AS YOUR ACCESS CODE WILL BE EMAILED TO YOU APPROXIMATELY 24 HOURS BEFORE THE EVENT. SCHEDULE Time Item 7:50 pm Virtual doors open 8:00 pm Presentation starts 8:45 pm Question time (approximately) 9:00 pm Presentation ends (approximately) SURVIVAL SKILLS HISTORY - Run by BTEC-QUALIFIED rider coach Kevin Williams, Survival Skills Rider Training is one of the UK's LONGEST ESTABLISHED INDEPENDENT post-test motorcycle rider training school. Survival Skills offers real-world and relevant training to riders at all levels of ability from newly qualified to experienced. "I launched Survival Skills Rider Training back in the spring of 1997 after realising there was a need for a different style of post-test training that wasn't aimed at developing a specific riding style to gain an advanced test pass, but instead catered for what we now call 'client-centred training', where the needs of the trainee are prioritised. Since then, I have delivered Survival Skills to approaching two thousand riders of every level of ability from newly-qualified to off-duty police riders." Survival Skills courses aim to help you understand:  WHY errors happen (ours and someone else's) HOW they happen WHERE they happen  and CRUCIALLY:  WHAT to do to AVOID getting into trouble whenever we can, and HOW to GET OUT of trouble when that proves impossible. PRESENTER - Kevin Williams MSc - inveterate biker, serial writer, scientific thinker... rider coach, safety advocate, speaker, creator of 'Science Of Being Seen' (SOBS) - is an independent BTEC-qualified rider coach. FEBRUARY'S LIVE ONLINE TALK EVENT: 'SOBS In-Depth - effective day riding lights & latest research'
20:00 – 21:00
SOBS IN-DEPTH - effective day riding lights & latest research'' The 'SCIENCE OF BEING SEEN' (SOBS) presentation is an in-depth investigation of the most common motorcycle crash of all - the 'Sorry Mate I Didn't See You' or 'SMIDSY' collision at junctions.  SCIENCE OF BEING SEEN - IN-DEPTH - alternating with the FULL version of SOBS will be a  second series of presentations that take an IN-DEPTH look at a particular issue within the full talk. The aim of these online talk events is to offer you additional insights into the problems of the 'looked but failed to see' error by drivers, how and why the resulting SMIDSY collision occurs, and on strategies for staying out of trouble. Even if you have already seen the full version of SOBS, the additional detail will help you understand why drivers occasionally don't see bikes... and why riders often fail to realise there's a threat! In this in-depth talk, I'll be looking at Day Riding Lights (DRLs). These are the lights typically mounted on the front of the motorcycle which are intended to make the bike more visible to other road users. The intent is to reduce the risk of collisions by making the motorcycle more conspicuous.  Some countries have required headlights-on on motorcycles by law for many years. Others - including the UK do not have such a rule, but instead there is no longer a switch to turn lights off during day time. In both jurisdictions, many riders choose to install additional DRLs on their bikes in the hope that the lights confer added safety. In this talk I'll look at how the concept of using DRLs for improved conspicuity came about, whether low beam (dipped) headlights are effective in the DRL role, what DRL rules have achieved in terms of safety, and what might constitute a more effective approach to using lights to make the motorcycle more conspicuous.  TICKETS ARE JUST £5. Attendance is limited to 30 people per event. IF YOU BOOK EARLY, YOUR ACCESS CODE WILL BE EMAILED TO YOU APPROXIMATELY 24 HOURS BEFORE THE EVENT. LAST-MINUTE TICKET SALES CLOSE TWO HOURS BEFORE THE EVENT, YOUR ACCESS CODE WILL BE EMAILED TO YOU AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. WHAT IF I CAN'T MAKE THE LIVE WEBCAST OR HAVE TECHNICAL ISSUES? CATCH UP LATER - the presentation will remain available for approximately 72 hours SEND ME AN EMAIL at info@survivalskills.co.uk - other places won't be monitored on the day ...Bruce E - "All good thanks Kevin, read twice, seen twice, always learn each time!" AWARD WINNING - our 'Biker Down' team in Kent was awarded a Prince Michael of Kent International Road Safety Award at the end of 2012 and a insurance industry award in 2013.   ...Paul C - "Thank you Kevin. 'Armchair Riding - visualisation and other tricks we can learn from sports psychology' The human brain is an amazing tool. And there are many ways we can use it to develop skills that are far from obvious. And one field that's looked at just how the brain can be trained to enhance personal performance is Sports Psychology. It's a field of study that first arose as long ago as the 1920s, though the recent history can be traced to the 1980s. Sports psychology looks at how cognitive and behavioral strategies can help develop skills that improve our performance of a task. And since motorcycling requires many of the same sort of skills that athletes employ, there's no reason we can't exploit the same techniques to develop our own abilities. The weather's closing in for the winter in the northern hemisphere and maybe we won't want to be out on the bike quite so often as when the weather's warmer and drying but it doesn't mean we can't usfully improve our riding during the off-season!
