OVERTAKING & making it safely out the other side

Overtaking is another of the activities that we tend to take for granted when we're riding a motorcycle, yet lead to more open road fatalities than the crash that riders fear most - the collision at a junction.

But just because we can, doesn’t mean we should. Overtaking goes wrong surprisingly often, and usually has serious consequences when it does. Riders tend not to come back to talk about overtaking crashes, so riders tend to underestimate the risks. Too many advanced riders are taught to focus on a 'perfect' overtaking technique and 'making progress' when the reality is that a sound overtaking strategy is all about eliminating the ways that an overtake can go wrong above all else. If we miss an overtake we COULD have made, we've not lost anything. But if we do overtake then discover we shouldn't have, we could lose our life. We overtake because it’s useful progress AND we can do it with minimal risk, and not to show off our skills.

In this webcast, I'll use my background as a courier to offer not just sound advice for staying out of trouble, but also challenge the belief that a good advanced rider is always looking to make progress.
