JULY LIVE ONLINE - CORNERING & fixing cornering problems
20:00 – 21:00
CORNERING & fixing cornering problems After junction collisions, cornering is where most riders come to grief, and it's not just inexperienced novices either - many riders with years of experience get cornering seriously wrong too.  The vast majority of rider training talks about how to corner 'properly' but rarely discusses the reasons that riders make mistakes. And that means when errors happen, they tend to come out of the blue and involve a rider with no 'get out of trouble' strategy.  A key element of the Survival Skills cornering courses is to go beyond building good cornering skills by also looking at cornering errors - where, how and why they happen. And then we look at what we can do to either avoid the error if we possibly can, or how we can get out of trouble if we find ourselves in a mess.  In this webcast, I'll use my background both as a courier and instructor to discuss both how the common mistakes happen, but also give you a range of strategies for dealing with them.  This is YOUR CHANCE to see a LIVE WEBCAST from the author of the 'Science Of Being Seen' presentation. CAN'T MAKE IT LIVE? The stream will be available for 72 hours after the presentation for you to catch up in your own time. TICKETS ARE JUST £5. Attendance is limited to 30 people per event. PLEASE ENSURE YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS IS CORRECT AS YOUR ACCESS CODE WILL BE EMAILED TO YOU APPROXIMATELY 24 HOURS BEFORE THE EVENT. SCHEDULE Time Item 7:50 pm Virtual doors open 8:00 pm Presentation starts 8:45 pm Question time (approximately) 9:00 pm Presentation ends (approximately) SURVIVAL SKILLS HISTORY - Run by BTEC-QUALIFIED rider coach Kevin Williams, Survival Skills Rider Training is one of the UK's LONGEST ESTABLISHED INDEPENDENT post-test motorcycle rider training school. Survival Skills offers real-world and relevant training to riders at all levels of ability from newly qualified to experienced. "I launched Survival Skills Rider Training back in the spring of 1997 after realising there was a need for a different style of post-test training that wasn't aimed at developing a specific riding style to gain an advanced test pass, but instead catered for what we now call 'client-centred training', where the needs of the trainee are prioritised. Since then, I have delivered Survival Skills to approaching two thousand riders of every level of ability from newly-qualified to off-duty police riders." Survival Skills courses aim to help you understand:  WHY errors happen (ours and someone else's) HOW they happen WHERE they happen  and CRUCIALLY:  WHAT to do to AVOID getting into trouble whenever we can, and HOW to GET OUT of trouble when that proves impossible. PRESENTER - Kevin Williams MSc - inveterate biker, serial writer, scientific thinker... rider coach, safety advocate, speaker, creator of 'Science Of Being Seen' (SOBS) - is an independent BTEC-qualified rider coach. With the benefit of a research-based Masters degree, Kevin's work to improve riding standards has always had a strong science background. Kevin has worked with thousands of riders since 1997, acted as a consultant to the TRL on rider training investigations, and served with several UK-based road safety projects, including Bucks County Council's 'Be a Better Biker' scheme, Somerset Road Safety Partnership's innovative multi-format 'Rider Skills' days at Castle Coombe circuit, and the KFRS 'Biker Down' sessions and their Brands Hatch-based 'Ride Skills' days. JUNE MINI RIDE-OUT Sat June 25 - Beaconsfield & the Thames Valley
10:00 – 14:00
I know that some riders are put off group riding by the high-speed, crash-happy reputation of big ride-out groups, so that's not what I'm planning. So the first thing I want to say is that these will not be high-speed blasts as I like to look at the countryside I'm riding through. If you're on an A2 bike, you'll be perfectly at home on these rides.  The jaunts will be for just a few riders - in fact, a maximum of five bikes per ride-out. That makes them ideal for riders who find big groups intimidating.  They won't be long - under 100 miles and something like 60 to 75 minutes riding each way - and we'll have a leisurely mid-ride break to rest and socialise - say three to four hours total. Keeping the rides reasonably short and relaxed means they are accessible to riders who aren't used to longer rides.  Although we'll be starting from locations around the M25, I know plenty of interesting and scenic routes which will mostly avoid the main A roads and be along B roads or wider minor roads.  I'll also try to make a stop for a decent early lunch rather than the standard greasy spoon. Where possible I'll make an interim stop at a farm shop too, just in case you fancy some nice produce.  You'll be riding with an experienced trainer too - whilst I won't be offering any training, I'll be happy to discuss anything to do with riding. And I may just have a few copies of my books with me available to buy.  A couple of other points -  rides will be WEATHER DEPENDENT. I'll be keeping an eye on the forecast and if it looks like a wet day, I'll postpone. They're meant to be fun rides, so there's no point in going for a ride in pouring rain on wet roads.  rides are PRE-BOOK ONLY. No turning up on the day. But if you realise you can't make it please let me know so I can offer your place to someone else.  if a ride is fully booked, DROP ME A LINE and I'll put you on the reserve list and offer you a place on a repeat ride from the same location.  I'm anticipating weekend dates would be more popular, but there's no reason they can't be run on weekdays - drop me a line if you'd prefer that. Similarly, if you know a couple of people and would like me to put a ride together especially for you, let me know.  Here are some dates for the diary: Sat April 23 - St Albans and over the Chilterns -- CANCELLED -- Sat May 28 - Epping and into NE Essex RESCHEDULED Sat May 28 Beaconsfield and the Thames Valley (route 1) Sat June 25  Beaconsfield and the Thames Valley (route 2) RESCHEDULED Sat July 29 - Epping and into NE Essex Lots of daring-do won't be needed, just bring along the enthusiasm to enjoy a nice day out on two wheels. JUNE LIVE ONLINE - 'SCIENCE OF BEING SEEN' - SCANNING THE SCENE
20:00 – 21:00
RESCHEDULED FOR WED 8 JUNE SOBS IN-DEPTH: scanning the scene - fixations and saccades The 'SCIENCE OF BEING SEEN' (SOBS) presentation is an in-depth investigation of the most common motorcycle crash of all - the 'Sorry Mate I Didn't See You' or 'SMIDSY' collision at junctions.  SCIENCE OF BEING SEEN - IN-DEPTH - alternating with the FULL version of SOBS will be a  second series of presentations that take an IN-DEPTH look at a particular issue within the full talk. The aim of these online talk events is to offer you additional insights into the problems of the 'looked but failed to see' error by drivers, how and why the resulting SMIDSY collision occurs, and on strategies for staying out of trouble. Even if you have already seen the full version of SOBS, the additional detail will help you understand why drivers occasionally don't see bikes... and why riders often fail to realise there's a threat! In this in-depth talk, I'll be looking at how we scan the scene around us and explain that we don't capture camera-like images of the world around us - discover the role played by fixations and saccades as we attempt to gain situational awareness. TICKETS ARE JUST £5. Attendance is limited to 30 people per event. IF YOU BOOK EARLY, YOUR ACCESS CODE WILL BE EMAILED TO YOU APPROXIMATELY 24 HOURS BEFORE THE EVENT. LAST-MINUTE TICKET SALES CLOSE TWO HOURS BEFORE THE EVENT, YOUR ACCESS CODE WILL BE EMAILED TO YOU AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. WHAT IF I CAN'T MAKE THE LIVE WEBCAST OR HAVE TECHNICAL ISSUES? The presentation will remain available for approximately 72 hours.  ...Bruce E - "All good thanks Kevin, read twice, seen twice, always learn each time!" AWARD WINNING - our 'Biker Down' team in Kent was awarded a Prince Michael of Kent International Road Safety Award at the end of 2012 and a insurance industry award in 2013.   ...Paul C - "Thank you Kevin. The books support the explanations you've given. Very enjoyable." GOING INTERNATIONAL - in 2018 and 2019 I took SOBS to New Zealand, as one of a team of international speakers on the nationwide Shiny Side Up rider safety initiative. We travelled around the country to visit over a dozen venues on each occasion. I reprised the role as a virtual speaker in 2021.  In 2020, SOBS was broadcast to viewers worldwide as one of the presentations featured on the US-based REVVtalks series of better biking webinars from riding experts around the world. SOBS was also a featured presentation in the spring 2021 RoadSafetyGB 'Powered Two Wheeler' safety week.  And of course, since 2012 I have been delivering SOBS to clubs and rider groups around the UK, both in person and most recently via Zoom. ...Paul In Shanghai - "Excellent Kevin. As is often said, one never stops learning!" SCIENCE-BASED - SOBS was created to solve a practical riding problem - the SMIDSY collision - but is based firmly on scientific research. SOBS is regularly updated as new studies emerge - the talk has been only recently been updated to reflect new studies on lighting arrangements and the 'looked, saw but forgot' theory that appeared in the literature as recently as 2018. Find all the latest news at the free-to-access website at www.scienceofbeingseen.org - each topic is supported by references to available research, a body of data extending back to the 1970s.  ...Clive - "That was useful. Thanks Kevin." AIDE-MEMOIRE - there's a short paperback book to act as a reminder to the presentation - the cost is £9.99 . SOBS is also available as an ebook download. Howard A - "...you were the only person who was giving strategic advice on avoiding becoming a casualty and made a Despatch Rider from 1978 to 1985 think outside of the box. It's all about avoiding those nasty accidents." SOBS - WHAT IS IT? A magician knows that the 'world' we see has been built entirely inside our brains. The magician knows that the audience about to attend the magic show understands that they are going to be fooled, yet still can't spot the tricks. When we ride a motorcycle or a scooter, we become the magician and the drivers and other road users all around us are our audience. One of our magic powers is invisibility, but there are a couple of extra deceptions involved. Yet the motorcyclist isn't aware that he / she is a magician and about to fool the audience. And the motorcyclist's audience of drivers doesn't know the biker is a magician either.  The 'Science Of Being Seen' (SOBS) presentation is an in-depth investigation of the most common motorcycle crash of all - the 'Sorry Mate I Didn't See You' or 'SMIDSY' collision at junctions. We'll ask why drivers continue to fail to spot motorcycles, and why conspicuity aids have proven largely ineffective. We'll see how to use hi-vis clothing and day-riding lights more effectively, how to improve our night time conspicuity, and conclude by looking at pro-active riding strategies that reduce the risks of being caught out by someone else's error.  Based on decades of scientific research into these crashes, the webcast reveals the secrets of our very own motorcycling invisibility show. SOBS is constantly updated with the most recent research. ...Brian M - "Thanks, Kevin found it very interesting, I have the book as well." SOBS HISTORY - the 'Science Of Being Seen' (SOBS) presentation was originally  written over the winter of 2011/12 as a proactive accident prevention module for the pilot 'Biker Down' courses developed by Kent Fire and Rescue Service. 'Biker Down' has since been picked up by most fire services in the UK as well as the UK military, and a version of SOBS was used by many Biker Down teams until 2020 - I personally delivered SOBS for KFRS at Rochester until the COVID crisis in March 2020. PRESENTER - Kevin Williams MSc - inveterate biker, serial writer, scientific thinker... rider coach, safety advocate, speaker, creator of 'Science Of Being Seen' (SOBS) - is an independent BTEC-qualified rider coach. DESPITE ITS IMPORTANCE TO ALL BIKERS, SOBS RECEIVES NO FUNDING and all research, writing and webhosting is paid for out of my own pocket. All income from presentation tickets and book sales is ploughed back into the project. Buy a ticket and you're helping not just yourself but every other biker who wants to know more about the SMIDSY collision. Thanks in advance.

MAY LIVE ONLINE - OVERTAKING & making it safely out the other side
20:00 – 21:00
OVERTAKING & making it safely out the other side Overtaking is another of the activities that we tend to take for granted when we're riding a motorcycle, yet lead to more open road fatalities than the crash that riders fear most - the collision at a junction. But just because we can, doesn’t mean we should. Overtaking goes wrong surprisingly often, and usually has serious consequences when it does. Riders tend not to come back to talk about overtaking crashes, so riders tend to underestimate the risks. Too many advanced riders are taught to focus on a 'perfect' overtaking technique and 'making progress' when the reality is that a sound overtaking strategy is all about eliminating the ways that an overtake can go wrong above all else. If we miss an overtake we COULD have made, we've not lost anything. But if we do overtake then discover we shouldn't have, we could lose our life. We overtake because it’s useful progress AND we can do it with minimal risk, and not to show off our skills. In this webcast, I'll use my background as a courier to offer not just sound advice for staying out of trouble, but also challenge the belief that a good advanced rider is always looking to make progress. GROUP RIDING - staying out of trouble the Survival Skills way With the promise of warmer weather just around the corner and the evenings stretching out nicely, so ride-out season is getting under way again as riders gather for group rides. Biking with buddies can be a lot of fun - I've had some of my best experiences with like-minded riders. But if ride-outs lack a bit of discipline it can be hard work and not particularly enjoyable. And occasionally group outings turn into a free-for-all. Over the years I've organised quite a few group rides and ridden in others, so in this webcast I'll offer you own guidelines - some thoughts on how to organise a group ride and what to do if you decide to join one...  ...and when to make a hasty exit from a group.  If you're new to group riding, or looking for tips to help you organise your own ride-outs, then this is YOUR CHANCE to see a LIVE WEBCAST from the author of the 'Science Of Being Seen' presentation. Attendance is limited to 30 people per event. TICKETS ARE JUST £5. YOUR ACCESS CODE WILL BE EMAILED TO YOU APPROXIMATELY 24 HOURS BEFORE THE EVENT. SOBS IN-DEPTH - February's LIVE webcast from Survival Skills
20:00 – 21:00
SCIENCE OF BEING SEEN - IN-DEPTH SCIENCE OF BEING SEEN - IN-DEPTH - in this special version of SOBS I'll be taking an in-depth look at how the human eye detects objects in the visual field - and it's not a straightforward case of 'look and see'. SIGN UP and get an enhanced understanding of why drivers don't see bikes... and why bikers may not realise there's a threat! Even if you have already seen the full version of SOBS, this IN-DEPTH look at a particular issue within the full presentation will offer you additional insights into the problems of the 'looked but failed to see' error by drivers, and the resulting SMIDSY collision.  TICKETS ARE JUST £5. Attendance is limited to 30 people per event. IF YOU BOOK EARLY, YOUR ACCESS CODE WILL BE EMAILED TO YOU APPROXIMATELY 24 HOURS BEFORE THE EVENT. LAST-MINUTE TICKET SALES CLOSE ONE HOUR BEFORE THE EVENT, YOUR ACCESS CODE WILL BE EMAILED TO YOU AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. WHAT IF I CAN'T MAKE THE LIVE WEBCAST OR HAVE TECHNICAL ISSUES? The presentation will remain available for approximately 72 hours.  ...Bruce E - All good thanks Kevin, read twice, seen twice, always learn each time!   AWARD WINNING - our 'Biker Down' team in Kent was awarded a Prince Michael of Kent International Road Safety Award at the end of 2012 and a insurance industry award in 2013.   ...Paul C - Thank you Kevin. The books support the explanations you've given. Very enjoyable.   GOING INTERNATIONAL - in 2018 and 2019 I took SOBS to New Zealand, as one of a team of international speakers on the nationwide Shiny Side Up rider safety initiative. And of course, since 2012 I have been delivering SOBS to clubs and rider groups around the UK, both in person and most recently via Zoom. ...Paul In Shanghai - Excellent Kevin. As is often said, one never stops learning!   SCIENCE-BASED - SOBS was created to solve a practical riding problem - the SMIDSY collision - but is based firmly on scientific research. SOBS is regularly updated as new studies emerge - the talk has been only recently been updated to reflect new studies on lighting arrangements and the 'looked, saw but forgot' theory that appeared in the literature as recently as 2018. Find all the latest news at the free-to-access website at www.scienceofbeingseen.org - each topic is supported by references to available research, a body of data extending back to the 1970s.  ...Clive - That was useful. Thanks Kevin.   AIDE-MEMOIRE - there's a short paperback book to act as a reminder to the presentation - the cost is £9.99 . SOBS is also available as an ebook download. SOBS - WHAT IS IT? SOBS is constantly updated with the most recent research. ...Brian M Thanks, Kevin found it very interesting, I have the book as well   SOBS HISTORY - the 'Science Of Being Seen' (SOBS) presentation was originally  written over the winter of 2011/12 as a proactive accident prevention module for the pilot 'Biker Down' courses developed by Kent Fire and Rescue Service. Filtering - what's legal, what's illegal and what's common sense
20:00 – 21:00
FILTERING - staying out of trouble the Survival Skills way I'll be asking is filtering an art or a science, does it need balls or brains? And all from the perspective of a 16 year courier veteran!  Crashes that happen when riders are filtering or lane-splitting lead to more injuries and fatalities than most riders realise. Sometimes riders simply fail to spot potentially dangerous situations as places worth avoiding, others rely far too much on other drivers to keep them out of trouble, and on faster roads riders confuse low speed differentials with low risk.  And then there is the legal angle. Unfortunately, there are some very poorly written articles online which claim to explain the law on filtering. Whilst there is nothing in law to say filtering in the UK is illegal, the way UK law is written and interpreted means that it's the way we perform the manoeuvre that could land us in court.  In this webcast, I'll use my background as a courier to offer not just sound advice for staying out of trouble, but also explain how the law determines responsibility for filtering collisions. This is YOUR CHANCE to see a LIVE WEBCAST from the author of the 'Science Of Being Seen' presentation. Attendance is limited to 30 people per event. TICKETS ARE JUST £5.
